Rather than demolish the old railway infrastructure, the city chose preservation, creating a unique recreational space. Today, the park boasts the original Hwarangdae Station building, vintage trains from various eras and countries, and scenic walking and cycling paths along the former tracks. It's a living museum where you can stroll through railway history while soaking in nature's tranquility.

A Glimpse into the Past:
What is Hwarangdae Railroad Park?

Hwarangdae Railroad Park sits on the site of the former Hwarangdae Station, once part of the Gyeongchun Line connecting Seoul to Chuncheon. This beloved route carried students and tourists to the countryside. When the line shut down in 2010, the station and tracks were reborn as a public park.

What to See and Do at Hwarangdae Railroad Park

This surprisingly spacious park offers plenty to explore. Here's a quick guide to the must-see attractions:

  • The Original Hwarangdae Station Building: Step into this charming, old-fashioned station. It's meticulously preserved, with ticket counters and waiting areas intact. Perfect for photos and imagining train journeys from decades ago.
  • The Mookdong Railroad Bridge: This stunning old bridge spans the Jungnang Stream. The sunset views are breathtaking—the rusty steel structure, calm waters below, and lush greenery make an ideal photo spot.
  • The Vintage Train Collection: The park's star attraction, featuring an impressive lineup of locomotives and cars. Spot a steam locomotive, diesel engine, and even a Seoul tram. My favorite is the 'Mugunghwa' passenger car, a staple of Korean long-distance travel. Some are open to enter for an interactive adventure.
  • The 'Taeyang' Starry Night Garden: As dusk falls, the park turns magical with thousands of twinkling LED lights on paths and trees. It's a hit in the evenings—great for romantic dates or family outings. The seasonal light displays keep it fresh and enchanting.
  • Walking and Cycling Paths: The main trail follows the old tracks, ideal for a relaxed walk or bike ride. Rent bikes nearby or bring your own; the flat, well-maintained paths suit all fitness levels.
  • The 'Cafe & Bakery on the Train': One car has been transformed into a cozy cafe. Sip coffee and munch pastries inside a real train— a quirky, unforgettable experience.
